Jan Kuypers
Jan Kuypers was born in 1925 in Holland where his father
owned
a
furniture factory. He graduated from the Academie of
Arts
and
Architecture, The Hague in 1947. Kuypers moved to
England
and then to Canada in 1951. In 1955 he undertook
post
graduate studies at Massachusets Institute of
Technology
in Industrial Design. He set up the industrial
design
department at IMPERIAL FURNITURE MANUFACTURING
in
Stratford, Ontario, where he was chief designer until
1960.
In
1960, he was a partner at E. ORR and Associates, Toronto.
In
1961, he founded the industrial design consultancy with
Julian
Rowan and Frank Dudas. He later helped to establish
one
of the longest running industrial design firms in Canada,
known
as KAN.
Ever since Jan Kuypers arrived from Holland in 1951,
he has
been
inspiring Canadian industrial designers. For over forty
years,
Kuypers has designed countless products enhancing
our
every day environment. In the opininion of furniture
historian,
Virginia Wright, "The range and quality of KuyperÍs
designs
for mass-production makes him the most important
Canadian
furniture designer of the 1950s." As well, he has
contributed
much of his time to professional organizations,
especially
the Royal Academy of Arts and the Association of
Chartered
Industrial Designers, Ontario.
