Lawrie G. McIntosh
Lawrie McIntosh was born in Clinton, Ontario in 1924.
He
graduated
from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of
Applied
Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1946. He
received
his Master of Science in Product Design from the
Illinois
Institute of Technology in 1951. Buckminster Fuller
was
a visiting lecturer at the time and became a mentor
to
McIntosh.
McIntosh worked for the
Saint John firm of T. S. Simms & Co.
Ltd. in 1946. He established his own practice,
McIntosh
Design Associates, in 1951. He served as the
president of
the Association of Canadian Industrial Designers
(ACID) in
1954. In 1981, he received a Citation for
Outstanding
Achievement from the National Design Council,
Design
Canada and ACID. He was a consulting editor
of Product
Design Engineer, and taught at the Ontario
College of Art
from 1983 to 1989.
